Samsung Galaxy M20 review: reboot budget segment

We are accustomed to the fact that true delight and interest can be experienced only in relation to the flagship Samsung. But such devices can afford a few. But inexpensive smartphones from the A-brand, as a rule, looked boring, the characteristics made me feel sad and there was a feeling that they were created according to the principle “and so it will come down.” But with the increase in the number of good state employees from China, users increasingly ceased to forgive Samsung the release of super-expensive scrap metal. There are less and less those who proudly do not accept “all Chinese nonsense” and perceive a mobile phone from a prestigious manufacturer as manna from heaven. And let it “does not drag” on the quality of the screen, the camera and the stuffing – but it is from Samsung. The outflow of buyers and the call “not to buy this stuff, because the Chinese are better and cheaper,” forced the company to descend from heaven. She is forced to change strategy and change the approach to creating state employees. We understand whether the Samsung Galaxy M20 has become the best choice to get a modern Samsung without serious financial investments. Or is it again talking exclusively about the magic of the name of the brand on which the company is trying to go again?

Inexpensive devices rarely surprise with appearance for the better – everything is beautiful, refined and made of glass only for the flagships. Samsung tried to create something pretty and relevant from the new smartphone, while using cheap case materials. Therefore, if you like mobile phones from the South Korean giant and do not mind that companies are boldly copying new features one after the other – the Galaxy M20 will please you. For some, this may seem like a herd instinct and without a pronounced “me.” But at Samsung this is called the new type of screen Infinity-V, and it is striving with all its might “not to mow under the iPhone”. More expensive – the impression of the front part and it is charming smartphone. It does not look cheap from the “face”, the manufacturer equipped the device with a new-fashioned IPS-screen with a drop-cut, and here they tried very elegantly to draw around it minimal frames. The matrix looks good, and a small notch under the front-end does not hinder much of life. Despite the fact that a lot of smartphones on the market have already acquired a drop-like neckline, such a performance of the “bangs” is still considered something fresh and not boring. However, the taste and color …

But alas, this self disappears “from the back”, the back panel looks very modest, without any claims to steepness. Add a producer here drawing, it would look better, and so the back cover shouts about budget and a mobile phone frankly lacks the “breed”. The “holy cold of metal” was taken away from the fans and practical plastic replaced it. He is actively slapping, and let the fingerprints are not too striking, it is not easy to wipe them off. But there is also an advantage in comparison with glass – the mobile phone does not slip out of hands. He assembled thoroughly and soundly. The smartphone is available in two colors: black and blue. We on the test, as it is not difficult to see, visited the black Galaxy M20. There are no bright colors, the company prefers to rely on soothing shades. No one hides the weight of the device – 186 grams. The presence of a capacious battery affects, rely on a refined and lightweight body is not necessary.

No surprises on the layout of connectors and ports smartphone does not present, all in their places. There is an audio jack and USB Type-C for data transfer and charging. Both interfaces are located below. The left side sheltered tray for two SIM cards and a full slot for microSD memory cards. From a practical point of view, Samsung did the right thing, giving independence to the microSD slot, an additional 512 GB will definitely come in handy. Physical keys on the right edge, navigation keys on the system – on the screen, fingerprint scanner – on the back side. There is no need to get used to such a location of functional elements, except that the 3.5 mm jack at the bottom of someone is puzzling. The lens of the main camera does not protrude above the back, because the probability of scratching it is negligible, this is a plus. There are no complaints about the stability of the fingerprint sensor, but it would not hurt to add speed to it. Alas, the need to build in the notification sensor, the creators have ignored. And this is a blatant fact of deliberate cheapening and savings. I think that most users would not refuse to pay extra for such joy.

Display and sound

Samsung is the leading manufacturer of AMOLED displays, but not for state employees. The Galaxy M20 does not have an infinitely contrast and with a perfect black color matrix on organic LEDs, but the proposed IPS display was quite good. The smartphone is not a giant, but a relatively moderate screen for 2019. Input data: resolution 2340×1080 pixels, 6.3 inches diagonal, density 409 ppi and an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. The display of the smartphone will not go down in history as the brightest and ideally tuned, but the picture is rich and smooth, everything is perfectly visible on the street, but in direct sunlight the brightness is still not enough. To some, the screen does not seem ideal, and because of the grayish tint in white. But in general, there are no serious deviations and claims to him, everything is within reasonable limits and nothing prevents him from displaying natural colors. For your money – the screen is good.

Multimedia speaker here is one and is located on the bottom. Power and detail the sound is not enough. By its sound, this is a normal modern budget smartphone and, despite the stated support for Dolby Atmos, it’s not worth counting on something special in sound quality. The old-fashioned way to listen to FM-radio, but the sound of “tearing the roof” will not, and you do not get the subtle nuances of sound and musical transitions. In headphones, music sounds familiar or more correctly neutral. If you have “exquisite” wishes to get a cool cool audiophile mobile phone, then this model is not about that.

Iron and performance

I would not like to turn the story about a new smartphone into a lecture on a hackneyed topic that the presence of Exynos in the “iron” part of the device is evil. But no matter how cool, the presence of a proprietary processor is the main problem of the Galaxy M20. And there are hardly many who are surprised by such a verdict. In the field of 3D graphics, Samsung got a stupid product, because here the Mali-G71 MP2 video accelerator is blown away for gaming performance. This is not the best option of all that could be purchased “on the side.” We get not the most outstanding combination of the CPU and the graphics chip, which is not able to cope with a number of tasks. In fact, it turned out to be a “dead” processor by modern standards, it’s hard to use demanding applications, and those games that run on it shamelessly lag not only at high settings, but also at medium ones. The gaming performance of the 2019 processor rolled back to the level of Snapdragon 625, which was introduced in 2016, which is sad. Exynos 7904 confirms the rule that Samsung’s low-end Samsung branded games do not matter and practice aggressive throttling. The corporate traditions of Korean processors can be traced to the tendency to overheat. Therefore, if you like to play on a smartphone, and in something cool, it is better to strain and buy something with Qualcomm processors. Whether it will be a product from Xiaomi, Meizu or any other manufacturer is not important. The main thing that it was a model on a Snapdragon chip and preferably at least from the 600 series. But let’s be objective, Exynos 7904 is able to ensure comfortable operation of the operating system, will be able to cope with the “easy” games and perform simple image processing. If this is exactly what you expect from a mobile phone, take boldly the Samsung Galaxy M20. Just avoid running demanding games. Or run, but then be ready to set the minimum graphics settings. Only in this embodiment, an inexpensive Samsung allows you to play without a serious slowdown. The novelty does not give a handicap in terms of RAM, it is released with 3 GB and 4 GB. The amount of flash memory to choose from 32 GB or 64 GB, you can add up to 512 GB through a microSD memory card.

In this model, Samsung did not participate in the competition “who has more cameras”, which was organized by manufacturers on the market. By the way, not without the participation of the South Korean giant, who did not want to yield to Huawei. The Galaxy M20 has a traditional kit: a two-chamber rear module and a single front-end. The overall quality of the shooting, as well as the organization of the process, is at a decent level. Still, Samsung can configure cameras well even in low-cost smartphones and the Galaxy M20 confirms this. The main camera is one of its strengths. With natural light or with artificial lighting, you can get a detailed picture with normal colors, but with a harsh contour sharpness. Some kind of “glitches” shooting algorithms are not observed. A large-format module is not at all pampering and actually comes in handy when there is a need to “embrace” more pictures. I especially liked how the smartphone shoots in low-light conditions. The pictures are detailed, and the software noise is removed well. In its price range, the smartphone shoots more than decently. Yes, this is a state employee and he falls short of the level of top camera phones, does not show miracles, but does not hit the face with dirt. According to the general feeling, the camera is at the level of Honor 8X and Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2, but inferior to Redmi Note 7. Selfie module is good – it works out for its money, especially in good external lighting conditions.

Samsung has repeatedly imputed that it is not very actively working on the autonomy of devices. And then there was the scandal with the exploding Galaxy Note 7, which made the Koreans even more careful with the milliamper build-up. More surprising was to see that Samsung was among those who are trying to sell users a hardy mobile phone with a good camera. Inside they installed an extremely robust 5000 mAh battery and this is an unprecedented generosity from the South Korean manufacturer. Yes, it seems that the voraciousness of the Exynos processor ultimately did not have the best effect on the duration of the device’s operation and did not allow it to stand on a par with the ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M2, but still the battery life is the trick of the smartphone. It supports fast charging when using a complete 15-watt adapter – it takes a little more than two hours to fully replenish the charge.

It is interesting to see how Samsung behaves in a bitter struggle with Chinese companies, without disdaining even price dumping. Galaxy M20 is a very competitive mobile phone for your money. He stood on a par with other devices, but did not beat them. The smartphone tried to be good, and the Koreans made an attempt to pass the test to create a popular affordable mobile phone with a swing for the title of sales hit. But to pass the test successfully did not allow saving on trifles and not the most successful hardware platform. But the “frameless” smartphone in the latest fashion, looks good, with separate slots for two SIM and microSD, removes well and in the list of its characteristics there is a NFC module that is desired by many. Despite the shortcomings, the Galaxy M20 should be recognized as a good product for Samsung. But not for nothing that they say that everything is relative. The Samsung Galaxy M20 no longer seems such an attractive smartphone for its money when you realize that it has decent competitors.
