In the “family” of Xiaomi’s sub-brands this year, another replenishment happened. From now on, the Redmi brand will carry the “family” values to create one of the best budget devices. Nobody canceled corporate tasks and there is a risk that later we will see the business model that Huawei and Honor profess when similar models are stamped in many ways, but different labels are molded onto them. At this stage, Xiaomi promises that Redmi will go its own way, and between the two brands there will be a clear boundary in terms of technical equipment of devices and price tags. Redmi is aimed at those who are looking for the best hardware for smartphones on the minimum budget, and Xiaomi will create flagships on the principle “I want everything at once, but without overpayment”. The sub-brand was launched powerfully and with a hit of sales – Redmi Note 7. Decent appearance, fashionable display, powerful stuffing for its class, double camera with steep features, capacious battery and surprisingly low price. All this made it possible to quickly get a novelty in hand and check how expectations coincide with reality.
In the fashion glass and gradient, here and Redmi Note 7 in the subject. We got a smartphone in black, there are still blue and red gradient versions. The creators have tried to give an inexpensive model so much style and nobility, so that externally it could not identify the state employee. He has a sandwich design: the front is a glass panel, the back is another, and between them there is no frame and metal, they used plastic here. This is done for the sake of impact resistance (the frame acts as a shock absorber). It is for this reason that our smartphone looks slightly battered, because it has already managed to survive a rather tough crash test: immersion in water, a lot of falls on the tile, and then 2 weeks of careless use. However, if the glass on both sides creates a pleasant feeling of high cost, the presence of polycarbonate haptic reduces the price of the device. Despite the diagonal of the display, the smartphone fits comfortably in the hand and is quite adequate in size to the competitors. Redmi Note 7 is quite thin, while moderately heavy.
A standard Redmi line can be found on the edges and we have a traditional roll call: infrared port, microphone for noise reduction and 3.5 mm audio jack at the upper end, on the right is a lock button and volume rocker, on the left is a hybrid tray for two SIM cards and microSD cards, and on the bottom is a microphone, speaker, and USB Type-C connector. Praise to the creators and this is the second among Redmi device with USB Type-C. The first in its time was Redmi Pro. There are no questions to the assembly, nothing backlash, nowhere is there any distortions and gaps. After the presentation, it turned out that the smartphone has splash protection and, in confirmation of this, a rubber pad was found on the sim card tray. A fingerprint scanner was installed at the back, a vertical iPhone-like dual camera, and a brand-new Redmi logo was applied. What didn’t like was the “build-up” from the back module block. For this reason, the smartphone is unstable on the table, and the camera module is wiping heavily. Moreover, if you put your smartphone in a silicone case, you can’t completely disguise it. In general, the smartphone looks fashionable and modern, although secondarily. But let’s ask honestly, who among the mass users, the owners of the model, will this worry for such a price? Most likely, there will be few of them.
Display and sound
The entire front panel is solid glass, but the display is not curved. Someone likes a trend teardrop-shaped neckline, someone doesn’t. Subjectively, the “droplet” came out quite elegant, allowing you to accurately fit the lens of the front camera. The speaker slot took place at the very edge above the lens of the selfie camera, and the event indicator was sent to the bottom indent, closer to the USB Type-C connector. Screen Redmi Note 7 is not bad both in performance and in practice. Testing did not show any critical problems. I note specifically that the manufacturer covered the matrix with Gorilla Glass 5 glass, which is a luxury for low-end devices. The resolution of 2340×1080 pixels fits well into the 6.3-inch diagonal of the matrix. Contrast even more than enough, there are no problems with pixelation, dot density is 409ppi. The viewing angles are not bad: when you deviate, the contrast is lost, but the colors are distorted minimally. The brightness of the screen shows one of the best indicators for its price segment. The color scheme is somewhere near the ideal for the IPS-matrix. The not quite correct color temperature stands out a bit from this number of advantages, but this annoying nuance can be easily corrected in the settings of the screen.
In terms of its sound, Redmi Note 7 presents no surprises – this is a normal modern mobile phone with one speaker, which is hidden on the bottom. It sounds pretty clean even at its maximum and is more pleasant than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro. But it lacks the depth, volume and range of frequencies inherent in more expensive devices. The company declares that a powerful amplifier is installed here, which is capable of pumping a good sound. It is clear in headphones, details are well heard, but subjectively it is ordinary, not outstanding, and it lacks “colors”, although there are no gaps and distortions in the sound. If you are a music lover who is demanding on sound quality, Redmi Note 7 will hardly suit you.
Iron and performance
Performance is an aspect of Redmi Note 7 that you don’t have to talk about for a long time. The Snapdragon 660 platform is a well-known representative of the smartphone shop. The first mobile phones at its base appeared in 2017 and at the time of release it was considered advanced and was a dream for budget smartphones. And now this dream came true and was on board a smartphone, whose price tag starts with $ 150. There are no surprises in terms of performance. The processor smoothly fulfills all tasks, including “digesting” time-consuming, like 4K-video playback. For games, it is suitable and very much. At maximum and average settings, they go without serious drawdowns and friezes. If evaluated in terms of power, then Redmi Note 7 is the top level for its price segment. The phone is fast, playful and with a good margin for the future. There are several modifications to choose from with different memory sizes, but it is best to pay attention to the versions with 4 GB and 6 GB of RAM, in order not to depend on the appetites of MIUI.
Well, 48-megapixels – it sounds impressive and this is a serious bid to attract attention. So far, this camera is rare in smartphones. Moreover, you do not expect to see such a module in an inexpensive device and there is a feeling that it is ready to enter into full-fledged rivalry with the best camera phones. It is felt that the creators of Redmi Note 7 were well aware that in terms of the camera, the novelty is obliged to “shoot” and it is to her that the most attention will be attracted. By itself, the fact that an affordable mobile phone with a 48 megapixel camera appears looks like a manifesto to all stereotypes that such camera devices get into surrender. It uses a dual-chamber rear module, where the key sensor Samsung ISOCELL GM1 48 megapixel paired with a 5 megapixel module, and ennobled it all 6 lens optics and dual LED flash. An additional sensor is used to more accurately determine the depth of objects in the frame, and very soon it will learn to help the main module in the difficult task of processing photos taken in low light conditions. After experimenting with various objects and shooting scenes, the conclusion is that the Redmi Note 7 camera is the best solution in its segment. Video is written with a maximum resolution of FullHD with a frame rate of up to 60 per second. The disadvantages are the lack of optical stabilization, the camera does not know how to write 4K and is somewhat frustrating with the quality of sound recording, but here it was difficult to expect anything more.
There is a lot of controversy about the reliability of information about the new camera module. In fact, the smartphone does have a Samsung GM1 sensor with an honest 48 megapixel matrix, but in the process of shooting the pixels are combined according to the “2×2” principle, so ultimately we get a picture of 12 amazingly clear megapixels without blurring. You can also forcefully turn on the 48 megapixel shooting mode, but in this case the picture is “programmed” programmatically, and the small pixel size on the matrix requires significantly more light, which leads to a decrease in the dynamic range. In other words, in most cases it would be better to use the 12 megapixel shooting mode.
Redmi Note 7 uses a 13 megapixel front camera from OmniVision. It removes tolerably, but no more. With good lighting, there is nothing, but the color rendition is frankly lame. It remains to hope that later everyone will bring to mind with the firmware update.
The battery here is set exactly the same as in Redmi Note 5 or Redmi 5 Plus – 4000 mAh. In our test of autonomy, he was able to hold out for 6 hours and 18 minutes. With a fairly frequent access to the mobile phone, its charge should be enough for one and a half, or even two days of work. But, of course, the final result will depend on the use cases of the device. There are no interesting power saving modes in the arsenal of Redmi Note 7, but there is a quick charge Quick Charge 4.0. But bundled with a smartphone, the company issued an adapter for 5V / 2A, so when using a standard charger, it takes about two hours to replenish the battery capacity. You can buy a unit with support for fast charging, the benefit of Xiaomi sells such devices for little money.
After all the time spent with Redmi Note 7, he definitely liked it. With the birth of the sub-brand, everything went well. Without a doubt, he is doomed to success and in his price segment his position is strong. With similar characteristics at a similar cost, no one can boast. The company managed to build a high-speed machine, with a good and large screen, good autonomy and a decent camera. Inadequate Xiaomi fans will surely sing the praises that everything is fine on the smartphone and will show on this smartphone when compared with any other competitors and will claim that they have not stood alongside. In part, they will be right, because it meets all the expectations and stereotypes that we used to receive from Xiaomi devices: the optimal balance of price and features. The adherents of the Xiaomi camp will complain that the device lacks individuality and, speaking of shortcomings, will lead the “old song about the main thing” and will suffer that the NFC is still not there. It is a pity, he would have been useful to many, and obviously would have added fans of this model. It is difficult to criticize the smartphone, which has almost no competitors and all the nagging break on the low price tag. We admit that despite a number of shortcomings, Redmi Note 7 has everything you need for daily pleasures to those who have a limited budget for the purchase. And the company as a gesture of goodwill increased the warranty on this model to 18 months. The smartphone is captivating and it’s hard to wish for more for the money. Redmi Note 7 is a great option for brand lovers and fans of universal devices. But remember that this is still a device from Xiaomi, so its software component, though not entirely bad, is, frankly, far from ideal.
Note: the global version of Redmi Note 7 will be available no earlier than the middle of spring 2019, and until then the smartphone does not have support for 20 bands, the Russian interface language, pre-installed Google services, and also contains many applications and services that are relevant only to Chinese residents. All the above problems can be solved by unlocking the bootloader with a further flashing of the smartphone (at your own risk).
